If you're mostly staying at home like me (and you should do that smartly), it's possible that you're watching more Netflix, the insanely popular streaming service.
One of the unexepcted things that has happened, however, is that this is leading me to read more, but not in place of watching stuff, but in addition to, by discovering new interesting things.
I've talked before about how I really liked The Witcher, and I'm now reading the book series. While the series spoiled a few things, there is still a bunch of new content in the books, or things that show something different, and I actually enjoy the writing and its pacing.
Also having linear stories instead of the series' back-and-forth is a nice change of pace.
For what it's worth, I had also started playing the last game, but that's trickier to play when we're not all adults during lockdown time.
Unfortunately this one is available on Netflix only until March 31st, which will have gone by the time this post goes up.
The series is basically mystery-of-the-week detective stories. But there are a lot of things to be enjoyed about the show beyond the 'who did it and how did they do it?' - the setting is lovely, the recurring characters have some amount of depth, and the backstory of the mystery is interesting in and of itself.
Sometimes it feels like there was an interesting story, and Father Brown (and us with him) just stumbles into it at the point when a crime was committed.
The way the criminals are confronted also provides for an interesting twist, with the detective more concerned about truth and saving people's soul and less about punishing or following the letter of the law.
For more thoughts, head over to this review, which includes some thoughts on the contrast with that other most famous detectie, Sherlock Holmes.
These are very difficult times for local businesses. If you can, support your local book stores!
Some, like Redmond's Brick and Mortar Books, may not have their doors open at the moment, but if you look around you might find digital alternatives that may help them while getting you the stuff you want.
Happy discoveries!
