Managing PMs, Redux

Eric posted a little while ago a great post on Managing PMs. If you haven't yet, go read it!

It's important to remark is that technical leaders are frequently in the same boat. They are also called upon to help their teams succeed, and that can take many shapes - technical direction and setting the tone for technical culture and norms, yes, but also interfacing with leadership and other teams, aligning partners, help with project management, and whatever else the team might need.

There are a few things that resonated quite loudly.

• Not every team needs the same kind of help. Eric does a great job walking through them.
• Not every team has the same needs at every point in the project. As teams age they often become more capable, and PMs and technical leads can change their role.
• Being on the same page with your team, peers and managers is not obvious and thus is best accomplished by focusing on it as a distinct concern.
