The year is coming to close. Days are the shortest they'll be for the season, which in the Pacific Northwest means that the stars will be out by the time I'm done with my workday.
This year turned out to be pretty good. I had a bunch of goals for myself - some were accomplished, other not. But over time, I am spending more time on things I care about, and things that provide more durable enjoyment.
Some of the fun things I'm doing more these days:
- More reading. I've been reading a bunch for self-improvement, to develop work skills, and also for pure enjoyment. I finally started reading John Grisham, and, who knew, I do like it!
- More playing. Alan Wake II is out, and while my playing time has petered out a bit, I've been enjoying it a great deal.
- More music. Not a lot, perhaps, but I've got my guitar tuned and I did spend a few weekends messing with it.
- More family activities. More time out in the park, yes, but also short hikes, decorating for the holidays, enjoying movies and music together, playing with our puppy.
- New experiences. Raising chickens, fixing some things around the house, learning how to be a dad to my ever-changing children and how to be a better husband to my beloved spouse.
- Learning things. More hands-on Linux and Android work after so many years of working with such a focus on Windows and its ecosystem is quite eye-opening - some things are better, some things are worse, and I'm often surprised by the gaps in one direction or another.
Giving thanks is not just a November thing after all.
Happy yearly reflections!
